Safe by Choice…Not by Chance
At Dyer & Butler, Health & Safety behaviour is very much led by the cultural philosophies of our business’ senior management. This philosophy reveals itself in our complete commitment to ensure that every person who works for us or comes into contact with our work, returns home safely, without incident or accident occurring. We are all very proud of our safety performance, and our key objective in this area is to maintain our excellent safety record.
We are fully aware of, and prepare for the constant day to day challenges of construction work, typical of those found in safety-critical sectors like airports, rail and highways. However, our health and safety ethos is never sector specific; we have one standard and never compromise on safety.
Our work can often be undertaken in adverse weather conditions, potentially at night and frequently demanding the use of heavy plant and machinery. Therefore, careful preparation is essential and we do this by applying the meticulous details of today’s health and safety processes and procedures and industrywide best practice. It’s what we do every day, how we do it and how we plan our work whilst focusing on Health & Safety that counts! The primary objective of our Health & Safety culture is to ensure we avoid all personal injuries in the work place. We fully appreciate that for many of our customers, disruption within an operational environment caused by an accident or serious incident at work will almost certainly incur delays and disruption to the public and a project’s programme.
Dyer & Butler’s committment to maintaining our excellent record within safety-critical environments, is managed by our SHEQ & T (Safety, Health, Environment, Quality & Training) Manager. This is alongside our team of highly experienced and dedicated Health & Safety professionals who are directly employed by Dyer & Butler to provide advice and support to all site and office-based employees. We systematically undertake routine and spot check inspections to ensure safety always takes the lead before any activity takes place.
To support our commitment to employees and those around them, we strictly adhere to BS OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health & Safety standards.
Key features of Dyer & Butler’s committment to Health & Safety
- Behavioural Safety – Dyer & Butler implements a behavioural safety program in order to achieve continual improvements in the company’s health and safety culture. Our behavioural safety initiative is called DABBS (Dyer & Butler Behavioural Safety). This system is all encompassing as it focuses both on safe and unsafe acts. This program incorporates the principals of visible felt leadership and utilises workplace observations and discussion to generate the necessary changes in behaviour at the point of work.
- Close Call Reporting – Dyer & Butler has a system for close call reporting and this proactive measure is geared towards identifying close calls and near misses before the situation can develop into something that may cause harm or loss. A simple reporting card is available on all sites and all cards that are filled in to report a close call are handed to the Site Agent so that the relevant report can be made. All close call reports are acted on by the site team. If a close call should occur that could have had more significant consequences, then the matter will be investigated by a member of the SHEQ Team.
- RoSPA – 5 consecutive Gold Medals received.
- Safety Matters – Dyer & Butler’s monthly Health & Safety newsletter ensures this remains at the forefront of our business and in the minds of all.
