Description
The site is located between Folkestone and Dover, Kent, at a point where the North Downs strikes the English Channel. This dramatic coastal route for the railway between Folkestone and Dover passes between the high chalk cliffs and the sea, through three tunnels and across the geologically unstable area known as Folkestone Warren. Since its construction in 1844, the route has been expensive to maintain because of the need to manage land slippage from one side of the railway and erosion by the sea on the other.
The project was to carry out repairs to a section of seawall which has become undermined by recent storms, causing a large section of walk way to collapse.
The main elements of the works that were undertaken were;
Sheet piling to the front and back of the existing sea wall, fill void between sheet piles and sea wall with concrete, tidal work.
Backfill along the back of the sea wall with compacted fill.
Reinstate the public foot path.
Fill and part fill the existing drain holes that pass through the sea wall.
