North Terminal Long Stay Car Park

Requirement
It had been identified that the existing car park layout (comprising a number of separate parking zones) & design did not conform to current best practice; therefore a sequential project of full refurbishment was required by our client, BAA Gatwick Airport Ltd. Although the majority of the parking zones were structurally acceptable it was identified that the surface course was nearing the end of its life. This combined with numerous non compliant paint markings lead to the conclusion that the solution was a thin overlay
Early Contractor Involvement
After consultation with BAA & design consultant TPS we proposed two construction options. These were overlaying the existing surface course with 25mm of 6mm SMA and raising the numerous chamber covers to the new level, or, if the number of covers requiring raising made this option uneconomical, plane off 25mm of the existing surface and replace with 25mm of 6mm SMA. The benefit of the 2nd option was that the planings were recycled and kept on site for other BAA works.
Scope
Circa 100,000m2 of new surfacing (combing overlay and plane and resurface), new entrance, kerb realignment, surface water outfall upgrade, paint markings and safety hand rail
