Gunwharf Quays Drainage & Paving Improvements

Gunwharf Quays is on a former Royal Navy establishment, which operated as HMS v Vernon until 1992.
- The Gunwharf quays commercial development which has been operating from 2001 is a vibrant shopping and entertainment centre, and the weekly footfall can be in excess of 120,000 people.
- Beneath the retail and entertainment area are two levels of Underground Car park, with spaces for 1,500 cars.
- The works consisted of structural repairs to a concrete support column within the car park, Provision of additional drainage to the promenade deck area to reduce perched water which had caused leaks into the car park below.
- Provision of additional Surface water drainage within the soffit of the car park to relieve the perched water within the promenade areas.
- Improvements to the existing waterproof system.
- Relaying of the existing slabs to an improved bedding specification and to improved drainage crossfalls. Installation of additional movement joints.
- All of the work had to be phased around the peak retail periods such as school holidays etc in order to mitigate any affects on the normal day to day business.
- Although work was occasionally carried out at night this was not always the quietest of periods within Gunwharf due to the abundant night life that prevailed.
