Legoland River Splash Ride

A contiguous pile retaining wall utilising 145no. piles up to 15m long.
Half of the ride (over 200m) is supported on a reinforced earth bank which varies in height up to 6m high. The bank is constructed in layers with geogrid between and a steel mesh face. Many of the footpaths are also supported on reinforced earth and there are also several reinforced concrete retaining walls. Over 13,000m3 of recycled material 6F1 was used in the reinforced earth banks.
Due to the limited size of the site we had to build a haul road in during the earth works and then work our way back out towards the access road with the concrete works, carrying out all the external works on the way as access back into site later on was difficult. Of the 420m of concrete flume, only 24m was straight! – the rest was curved and elevated which was particularly challenging to set out. Spraycrete concrete was used to the form walls where they were curved and banked as an acceleration measure by removing the need for complex, bespoke shuttering.
Legoland’s theming contractor installed some quite spectacular themed areas around the ride. including:
- The ICE dragon which took 1 year build (brick by brick)
- The Dragon rib bones
- The sea serpent scene
- Various signs and other models.
We installed over 1800m of fence, elevated walkways, maintenance access stairs and a queuing platform. Also there were several small timber buildings (including an operator’s booth, an operator’s watchtower and a photo booth).
