Midgham & Theale

This scheme was procured, tendered and managed outside of the successful framework contract that already exists with Network Rail. The project for Network Rail MP&I Civils (Western), was to replace two culverts near Reading.
The Midgham and Theale culverts are two separate structures 6 miles apart at stream crossings under the mainlines between Theale and Thatcham stations.
The new precast concrete culverts replace existing brick pier and concrete beam structures which was demolished as part of the works.
Work comprised of the design, manufacture and installation of a new pre-cast concrete culverts which were lifted into place in a 50 hour possession in September 2007. During this possession, the rail tracks over the culverts were cut and removed, the existing structures demolished and embankments excavated to formation. The new PCC culvert units were then craned into position, backfilled and the tracks replaced and joints welded, followed by post possession ballast tamping and track monitoring operations.
