If you are interested in developing a career as a Site Engineer or Quantity Surveyor but you haven’t already been to university, you could choose to start work and attend part-time education on a day release basis.

APPRENTICESHIPS
Similarly, we offer apprenticeships to a small number of individuals every year to gain a trade skill. Dyer & Butler offers apprenticeships in a number of disciplines and as an apprentice we will sponsor you to attend college on a day (or block) release basis whilst gaining on site experience to gain an NVQ (National Vocational Qualification).
Once you have an NVQ this could just be the beginning for you. There are options available to go on to obtaining other qualifications and professional memberships.
GRADUATE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES
At Dyer & Butler, we are aware of the importance of recruiting graduates and the benefit to us by training them properly. We offer a development programme to Civil Engineering Graduates and Quantity Surveying Graduates – this is a professional training scheme over a 2/3 year period, working together with the ICE (Institute of Civil Engineers) and the RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors). The aim is that you become professionally qualified at the end of this period. Our Building Division runs a similar scheme together with the CIOB (Chartered Institute of Building), over a similar period of time.
These professionally qualified grades of membership are recognised internationally and are very highly valued. They are regarded as a minimum requirement by many engineering companies and attaining them is widely viewed as a significant achievement and acts as a benchmark for capability and experience.
Each graduate will work closely with a delegated Engineer or Surveyor who acts as their mentor. They meet quarterly to assist the graduate in achieving the development objectives set out by the ICE or the RICS. A number of membership grades are available for graduates to recognize all levels of skill in the industry. After training is complete, the graduate will produce an experience and project report to the ICE for acceptance prior to exam entry. Success at the interview and written essay will lead to Technician, Incorporated or Chartered status for Civil Engineers. Surveyors may qualify as Chartered Surveyors.
