Committed to WRAP

The construction industry is responsible for some 120 million tonnes of construction, demolition and excavation waste (CDEW) every year – around one third of all waste arising in the UK.  An estimated 25 million tonnes of this waste ends up in landfill without any form of recovery or reuse.

Recognising the environmental and economic impacts of these levels of wastage and land filling of material resources, the Government – Strategy for Sustainable Construction has established the target for construction waste in England of a 50% reduction by 2012.

As of February 2009 Dyer & Butler have signed up to the WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) target of halving construction waste to landfill.

In doing so Dyer & Butler have committed to:

•  Set a target for reducing year on year waste to landfill by 10% with an
    overall 50% reduction target

•  Embed the target within the Environmental Policy and procedures

•  Set corresponding requirements in project procurement and engaged
    with the supply chain

•  Measure performance at a project level relative to a corporate baseline

•  Report annually on overall corporate performance

From initial tender information Dyer & Butler investigate ways in which to minimise, reuse, recycle and dispose of waste to destinations other than landfill.  Dyer & Butler will estimate, measure and review quantities of waste produced through the Site Waste Management procedure, reporting on progress on two 6 monthly dates in April and October.  All sites produce a final evaluation in the Contracts Completion Report which is reviewed at Board Level.
