The project comprised the construction of a new sheet pile retaining wall and reinforced concrete capping beam with a N2 W2 vehicle restraint system on all four quadrants of the bridge approaches. The work also included diversion of existing services and the full depth reconstruction of the carriageway and footway.

Embankment improvement works and highway reconstruction on both approaches of the Forest Road Bridge which crosses the rail between Horsley Station and Effingham Junction Station. The works comprised of:

  • New sheet piled retaining wall
  • Reinforced concrete
  • capping beam
  • N2 W2 vehicle restraint / containment barrier
  • Diversion of the existing services
  • New drainage installation
  • Waterproofing bridge deck
  • Full depth carriageway reconstruction
  • New kerbing and footway construction
  • New road markings and signage
  • Soft landscaping

18% of the overall waste generated during construction was re-used or recycled. The majority of the excavated topsoil was not suitable for re-use or recycling. Dyer & Butler are committed to increasing the percentage of waste materials that can be diverted from landfill and our site management actively engage in reducing waste through our ISO14001 certification and WRAP initiative.

The work was undertaken in an ecologically sensitive area with Great Crested Newts present. Dyer & Butler worked closely with an appointed ecologist to ensure the successful translocation of amphibians was completed prior to construction.

A vibration-less silent piler was used for pressing the sheet piles into the ground which negated environmental pollution from noise and vibration.

The location of the site is adjoined by residential areas to both sides of the bridge approaches and therefore communication with local residents was a key factor in delivering a seamless construction project. We produced letters to inform the community of our plans and provide information regarding any disruption the project may have generated. In addition our site management and operatives were briefed to deal with any enquiry or complaint made by the public.
