Project Red, Severnside, Bristol

Client: Severnside Distribution Land Ltd

Value: £0.97m

Contract: ICE Minor Works 3rd Edition

Full depth construction of 450 linear meters of new access road and roundabout. The works also included installation of over 10,000 wick drains, new embankment construction, drainage and the construction of a piled culvert.

Dyer & Butler delivered enabling works for construction of a proposed industrial park at Avonmouth near Bristol. The project involved Section 278 works to tie 450 liner metres of new access road into the existing highway network and comprised the following elements:

  • Design & installation of a wick drainage system to consolidate the existing ground
  • 20,000m3 embankment construction
  • Pre-cast concrete piling to support the new construction of an under embankment pre-cast concrete box culvert with reinforced concrete wing walls.
  • Ducting and drainage
  • Carriageway construction
  • Street lighting and furniture
  • Section 278 works to tie into the existing roundabout and highway network
  • Diversion of the existing rhine network

  • 100% of the waste generated from the construction activities was diverted from landfill and reused on site.
  • We did not commence the piling work until bats had vacated the adjacent trees.
  • Our client employed an Environmental Consultant to monitor reptile habitats.
  • Our work to modify the existing Rhine network was regulated by the LSDB (Lower Severn Drainage Board).
  • We procured a recycled 6F2 material.

There were buildability issues with the granular embankment and the reinforced concrete culvert headwall. Dyer & Butler drove the design changes to ensure a timely resolution had minimal impact on the construction programme.
