Crockford & Binfields Roundabouts

Back to all

The project involved the modernisation and signalisation of three key roundabouts: Ringway, Crockford and Binfields, along the A33, which connects the M3 to the M4 and forms part of Hampshire County Council’s strategic transport upgrade between Basingstoke and Reading. Each of the roundabouts involved the following elements:

  • Widening the approaches and the circulatory carriageways of the roundabouts to provide additional slip and turning lanes
  • Signalising all approaching arms. Toucan crossing for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Installation of new road signs, vehicle restraint systems and LED streetlighting
  • Installation of new storm water drainage
  • Diverting existing services i.e. LV and HV, watermains, telecoms (BT and cable)
  • Day and night surfacing works
  • New footways along with pedestrian barriers and fencing
  • Upgrading an existing balancing pond which took surface water from Crockford and Binfields roundabouts

All drainage, surfacing, lighting solutions, road construction and traffic management were successfully delivered in a live, busy urban environment with works managed efficiently to minimise disruption. The work on all three roundabouts was carried out concurrently to minimise the duration of the disruption to regular commuters using the route with all three roundabouts handed over within weeks of each other.

During the scheme, we effectively managed the statutory utilities bringing best practice from our Aviation division to surpass delivery and avoid unnecessary service strikes through improved operational procedures to our permit to dig process.

Through our selection of plant subcontractors with specialist equipment for the concrete forming vehicle restraint barrier and specialist TM supply chain for TM design, we facilitated a seamless transition between shifts by ensuring they supervised all TM and provided a detailed face to face handover to site management after each shift.

Our in-house Environmental specialist supported our site management team to carry out the work to the balancing pond with minimum disturbance to its wildlife resulting in a large pond capable of a more diverse habitat.

The scheme was fully designed by Hampshire County Council’s contracted designers and was based on limited historical and investigative information. This meant that the new drainage design frequently clashed with existing services or structures. Our site management team used their expertise to work closely with the Client’s project team in order to construct a fully functional system.

Our in-house Engineering and Design services team ensured we were able to respond efficiently to the complexities of the works i.e. the design of street lighting, ITS and the programming of statutory diversions.

Our team discovered multiple unchartered services which required diverting. In close collaboration with the client, we actively managed the coordination of these diversions as well as their performance with the relevant utility companies to ensure that they were completed in the quickest possible time. We also carried out all civils works involved to enable these diversions to take place without delay. We held regular progress meetings with the client to identify critical programme items and their impact upon project completion.
