Back to all

Port of Tilbury is located on the River Thames and is the principle port for London with extensive facilities for containers, paper import, grain and other bulk cargo. Dyer & Butler were awarded the contract to relocate one of the port’s main clients. This project was part of POTLL’s expansion plans.

The scope of works included removal and replacement of 250m of existing rail track embedded in concrete slab, earthworks, construction of foundations for the new RUBB shed of 4500m², drainage, concrete slabs and surfacing, new pre-fabricated offices and entrance island, UTX (Under Track Crossing) for new incoming services and pumped rising main, new high security fencing and gates.

The project was carried out in a live port environment, within the container terminal. Our efforts to carry out the works safely and without security breaches, whilst maintaining robust communication with the Port Authorities and other users throughout, were commended by the Client.
POTLL’s tight timescales for the move was a challenge for the site team who planned and carried out the works concurrently in all areas of the site.

Dyer & Butler managed and coordinated the design of all elements of the project in -house. Design elements included earthworks, foundations, RUBB shed structure, drainage and rail.

Substantial programme and cost savings were achieved by using Roller Compacted Concrete. Dyer & Butler laid 350m3 per day (700m2 at 500mm depth).

The total of 10,000m3/ 20,000m2 of concrete was placed in 29 days. The team erected a batching plant on site to cope with the demand of concrete supply and programme.

Employer’s requirements included for the provision of a 3rd rail on site. Through innovation, we introduced the Rhomberg Sersa Universal Track Adjustment System which enabled Dyer & Butler to construct 250m of embedded rail in 2 weeks. This embedded rail solution not only provided programme savings, it also created greater storage space for the Maritime Terminal Move.
