DYER & BUTLER AWARDED NETWORK RAIL CONTRACTS TO REPLACE FOOTBRIDGES IN SUSSEX

2nd March 2018

Back to all

Dyer & Butler, a multi-disciplined engineering services specialist focused on transport infrastructure including airports, railways and highways, has been awarded several contracts by Network Rail to replace a number of existing Exmouth precast reinforced concrete footbridges along its Sussex route.

The contracts are part of a wider, rolling programme of maintenance work that the Dyer & Butler southern rail division is undertaking on behalf of Network Rail to ensure that its network remains safe and reliable.

One of the first structures to be replaced was the Boswell footbridge near Caterham railway station, that was built during the 1950s and nearing life expiration.

Dyer & Butler Senior Contracts Manager, Andrew Hodson commented: “Night possessions of the line were given to our project team for the demolition, as well as the installation work for the new steel bridge which was lifted into position by an all-terrain mobile crane.

“Due to the site’s close proximity to local homes, the team worked carefully to avoid excessive noise and disturbance to local residents throughout the seven-week project which ran to programme.”

Prior to the site works commencing, representatives from Dyer & Butler accompanied the Network Rail project team at a local ‘drop in’ session for members of the public to explain the scheme in more detail and answer questions.

Advance warning notices were posted locally and letters dropped to local residents that included the key weekend possession dates, as well as the dates on which demolition and crane use would take place overnight.

The scope of works included the staged demolition and removal of the existing footbridge and the installation of a replacement, pre-manufactured steel footbridge that will provide improved access.

The new staircases and main span have been recoated in accordance with Network Rail’s M20 protective system, providing improved durability and returning it to a visually acceptable standard. The bridge was also fitted with Perma-grip hazard warning tactile flooring, DDA Stairmaster nosings and Perma-grip PU anti-slip surfacing.
